Lake Merritt Youth Rowing
In 2018, Lake Merritt Youth Rowing (LMYR) expanded its popular summer program to now include Fall and Spring, allowing middle and high school-aged kids to row recreationally on the lake year-round!
LMYR offer youth ages 12-18 the chance to try the great sport of rowing on beautiful Lake Merritt in the heart of Oakland. Participants row in 8- or 4-oared sweep rowing shells and smaller sculling boats that help build technique and skills in a fun, safe environment.
The new Fall and Spring sessions give youth and families a positive after-school experience that they can rely on, with continuous year-round coaching, and the opportunity to build their rowing skills and master this rewarding sport.

Meet the Coaches
Chris Dadd, Co-Head Coach (Tuesdays): Chris Dadd is the Coach of the Masters Women's Team at LMRC, which he started coaching in 2010, and he runs the LMRC Summer Youth Rowing Program as he has for two decades. He is the head coach of the men's crew at Berkeley High School where he started coaching in 1999, and he is an instructor at the Open Water Rowing Center where he has taught since 1993.
After graduating from Berkeley High School (class of 1976), Chris first learned to row with the Humboldt State University Lightweight Men's Crew. He later returned to the Bay Area and raised a family while obtaining a Masters Degree in Kinesiology from the California State University at Hayward. He also joined the Lake Merritt Rowing Club and Open Water Rowing Center where he has rowed for decades.
Brandon Caesar, Co-Head Coach (Wednesdays): When not in Vietnam, Brandon lives in Berkeley with his wife and two sons. In addition to coaching the youth program at the Lake Merritt Rowing Club, Brandon also coaches the varsity women at Berkeley High School.
He started rowing at Berkeley High School in 1999 and joined the Lake Merritt Rowing Club in 2000. After high school he rowed at Orange Coast College (class of 2005) and Washington State University where he graduated in 2009. In addition to coaching various summer camps for Berkeley High School and Oakland Tech High School, Brandon coached the LMRC Summer Youth Rowing program almost every year from 2006 to 2018, coached over a year for the masters rowers at the East Bay Rowing Club, and has also coached three full years for the men's crew at Berkeley High School and one for Oakland Technical High School. Unrelated to all that he also knows Vietnamese.
Olivia Mcshea, Assistant Coach (Tuesdays): Olivia rowed competitively for 4 years with Princeton University. She placed 4th in the country in the woman's 4+ at the 2012 NCAA Championships. After rowing at such an intense level, Olivia enjoys being on the water in a different capacity. Passing on the joys of rowing to the next generation with LMRC is one of the highlights of her week! If not coaching the youth program in the afternoon, you can find her jogging around the lake or going out for a paddle herself.
